トンガ語 tapu が英語に入って taboo。十八世紀の太平洋航海の記録を通じて持ち込まれた、ポリネシア由来の借用語。
もとは触れてはならない神聖なもの、あるいは穢れたものを指す語で、英語では宗教色が薄れ、社会的に口にしてはいけないこと全般を指すようになった。a taboo subject（触れてはいけない話題）。
形容詞にも動詞にもなり、The topic is taboo（その話題は禁物だ）のように使う。ヨーロッパ以外の言語から英語に入って広く定着した、代表的な語のひとつ。
