tenancy は tenant「借りて住む人」に、状態や立場を表す -cy が対応する語で、「賃借、借りて使用していること」を意味する。tenant が借り手本人を指すのに対し、tenancy は、その人が部屋や土地を借りている関係、あるいはその期間に目を向ける名詞だ。
