中英語 tenthe（第十の・十分の一）に続く形で、ten + -th（序数や分数の分母を作る）。古英語の序数 tēoþa がもとにあり、その語尾 -þa が現代の -th にあたる。
英語の序数は fourth・fifth・sixth と -th で作るのが基本で、first・second・third だけが別の形。分数も a tenth（十分の一）のように同じ -th を使う。
ten と tenth では母音が変わらないのに対し、five / fifth、twelve / twelfth は綴りが変わる。古い形の名残がこの不規則さに残っている。
