古英語 þrēat は「脅威・暴力的集団」を表し、相手に力をかけて押し進むような危険を指した。その背景にある *trewd-（押し付ける・突き進む） のイメージが、相手へ強く迫る動作につながっている。

そこから threat は、直接の脅迫だけでなく、被害をもたらす可能性のある「脅威・危険源」も表すようになった。threat は、危険がこちらへ押し迫ってくるものと覚えると、環境上の脅威や安全上の脅威にも応用できる。
