upward は up（上へ）+ -ward（〜の方向へ）。古英語 upweard にも上向きの意味があり、現在は上へ向かう動きや方向を表す。look upward は上を見上げること、an upward movement は上向きの動きだ。
an upward trend は増加傾向、an upward revision は数値などの上方修正を指す。グラフの線が右へ進むにつれて高くなる場面を思い浮かべると、空間の方向から数量の増加へつなげられる。upwards も上へという副詞として使われる。upward では、すでに高い位置にあるというより、高い側へ向く方向に注目したい。
