印欧祖語の teḱ（生み出す・作る）は、ギリシャ語 τέκτων（職人・建築家）や τέχνη（技術）を経て、英語の tech / techno に現れる。technology・technique・technical・technological は、いずれも「作るための知識や技術」という方向に意味が広がった語である。τέκτων に由来する tect も tectonic・architectonic に残り、建築や構造に関わる語を形作る。
ラテン語 texō（織る・作る）からは text が生じ、textile・texture・text・textbook・pretext・hypertext のように、織物から「組み立てられたもの」「書かれたもの」へ意味が展開した。ギリシャ語 ἀρχιτέκτων を経た arch は architect・architecture に現れる。一方、subtilis とそのフランス語形を経た subt / sotel は、もともと細かく作られたものというイメージから subtle・subtlety・subtilize などにつながるとされる。
同じ系統には、作る・生み出すという古い意味を背景にした toc（tocopherol・tocology）や、ゲルマン語系の thist（thistle・thistledown）、than（thane・thaneship）も含まれる。英語では tech が「技術」、text が「織り上げたもの・文章」、arch が「建築を作る人やもの」のように、それぞれ異なる分野へ専門化している。
