ラテン語 astringō（きつく締める・縛る）= ad-（〜へ）+ stringō（引き締める・束ねる）。「ぎゅっと締めつける」が原義。
肌や組織を引き締める薬が「収れん剤」、口の中が締まるような味が「渋い」、そこから人の態度や批評が「厳しい・辛辣な」へと広がった。
stringō の仲間には strict（厳しく締めた）・stringent（厳格な）・restrict（引き締めて制限する）・strain（引っ張る）がある。string の形を見たら「ぴんと締める」と読むとよい。
