astrology（星の位置による占い）+ -er（〜する人） で「星占い師」。背景にはラテン語 astrologus（星を読む人）、さらにギリシャ語 ᾰ̓στρολόγος（星を読む・占星の）がある。
astrologus は astēr（星）+ -logus（「〜を語る人・学者」を作る）。astēr は *h₂eHs-（乾く・燃える）につながり、「燃えるもの＝星」というとらえ方。-logus のほうは *leǵ-（集める）で、「言葉を集めて語る人」。
同じ astr- は astronomy（天文学）・asterisk（星印）・disaster（星回りの悪さ＝災難）に共通する。astro／aster を見たら「星」、-loger は「それを語る人」と分けて読むとよい。
