- 英語backwards後ろへ・（発展が）遅れた、後進的な
覚え方
backwards は back（後ろ）+ -ward（〜の方向へ）+ -s（副詞を作る語尾）からなる語。-ward の奥には印欧祖語 *wert-（向きを変える）がある。
「後ろの方向へ」という原義がそのまま「後ろへ・逆に」という意味になり、比喩的に「進み方が普通と逆・遅れている」という意味でも使われるようになった。中英語では bakwardis という形でも使われていた。
-ward の仲間には forward（前方へ）・toward（〜の方へ）・onward（前へ）がある。-ward を見たら「その方向へ」と読むのがコツ。
