中英語 blowere（吹く人・送風具）= 古英語 blāwan（吹く）+ -ere（動作主をつくる）。「吹くもの」がそのまま「送風機・ふいご」になった。
blāwan は *bʰleh₁-（吹く）にさかのぼり、blow（吹く）・blast（突風）と同じ系統。楽器を吹く人（吹奏者）にも使い、イギリス英語の古風な俗語では電話を the blower と呼ぶ。leaf blower（送風式の落ち葉掃除機）が現代の代表例。
