ラテン語 catēchismus（キリスト教の教理教育） から。信仰の要点を「問い」と「答え」の形に並べてまとめたもの、つまり教理問答（書）を指す。

そこから比喩的に、決まりきった問答集・型どおりの信条一覧という意味でも使う。the Catechism（公教要理）のように定冠詞つきで特定の教理書を指すことも多い。

形容詞は catechetical（問答式の）、動詞 catechize は「問答で教え込む・問いただす」。
