politicsの語源と覚え方

polit はギリシャ語 πολῑ́της（市民）で、市民の集まる都市が背景にある。ics が領域の名をまとめ、市民全体に関わることをどう決めるかという営み、すなわち「政治」になった。
個人の事情ではなく、集団の利害を調整して公の決定を行う活動だ、という区切りが芯にある。
そこから、組織内の駆け引きを office politics と呼ぶ用法にも広がった。political（政治的な）と合わせて、polit- を見たら「市民」と読むとよい。
