ラテン語 cōnfūsus（混ざり合った）= con-（共に）+ fundō（注ぎ出す・敵を敗走させる） から。別々のものを一緒に注ぎ込んで混ぜてしまった状態が原義。
もとは軍勢が入り乱れて総崩れになる意味合いが強く、そこから頭の中で物事が入り混じって整理できない「混乱した・困惑した」へ移った。I'm confused.（わけがわからない）のように人が主語になり、物事が主語なら confusing を使う、という区別が最重要。
*ǵʰewd-（注ぐ） の系統には refund（注ぎ返す→払い戻す）・fuse（溶かして混ぜる）・profuse（あふれるほどの）があり、fus / fund を見たら「注ぐ・流し込む」。
