ラテン語 cōnfūsus（混ざり合った）= con-（共に）+ fundō（注ぎ出す） の系統。いろいろなものが一緒に注ぎ込まれて混ざるが芯で、confusing はその混乱を「引き起こす側」を表す。
つまり「（人を）混乱させる・わかりにくい」で、主語になるのは説明・案内・状況など物事のほう。a confusing explanation（わかりにくい説明）、It's confusing.（ややこしい）。混乱している人自身は confused（I was confused.）で、-ing と -ed の取り違えに注意。
*ǵʰewd-（注ぐ） の仲間は confusion（混乱）・fuse（溶け合う）・refund（払い戻す）。fus を見たら「混ざって流れる」と読むとよい。
