ラテン語 cōnfūsus（混ざり合った・混乱した）は、con-（共に・完全に）+ fundō（注ぎ出す）というイメージから生まれた。「いくつものものを一緒に注いで混ぜる」状態が、confuse の「混乱させる・取り違える」へ発展した。
fundō には「敵を敗走させる」という意味もあり、相手の隊列を混ぜ返して崩す感覚にもつながる。con- のもとにある *kom-（共に・完全に）と、fundō に関係する *ǵʰewd-（注ぐ）を押さえ、con は一緒に、fund は注ぐと覚えると、confuse の「ごちゃ混ぜにする」意味を思い出しやすい。
