un-（〜でない）+ clear（透明な・障害のない）で「はっきりしない・分かりにくい」。clear の「澄んでいて見通せる」状態が欠けている、と考えるとよい。
物事の見通しにも説明の分かりにくさにも使える。It is unclear when the shipment will arrive.（荷物がいつ届くかは不明だ）、If anything is unclear, please let me know.（不明な点があればお知らせください）はメールの定型句。
