覚え方
ambiguous はラテン語 ambiguus（複数の意味に開かれている、可能性の間で揺らぐ）に由来する。ambigō（往復する・決定で躊躇する）+ -uus（動詞語幹から形容詞を作る語尾）という形で、「一つに決めず、あちらこちらへ揺れる」状態を表す。
そのため、ambiguous は「曖昧な・不明確な」だけでなく、一つの文や発言が複数の意味に解釈できる「多義的な」という意味にもなる。材料では、前面・額を表す *h₂ent- と、駆り立てる *h₂eǵ- も関連要素として示されている。
ambiguity（曖昧さ）や disambiguate（曖昧さを解消する）も同族。ambig- を見たら「判断が一つに定まらず、行ったり来たりする」と読むと、意味を思い出しやすい。
