覚え方
contingent はラテン語 contingō(触れる・接する)の現在分詞 contingēns に由来する。con-(共に)+ tangō(触れる)で、「何かに触れて関係する」「ある条件に接して起こる」という原義から、「条件付きの・他に依存する」という形容詞になった。
同じ「接触」のイメージから、contingent は「条件にかかっているもの」、名詞では「ある任務に結びついた一団・部隊」を表す。con- の *kom-(共に)と tangō の *teh₂g-(触れる)を押さえ、何かに触れて成立する=条件次第と覚えると、contingency(不測の事態・条件依存)も理解しやすい。
