ラテン語 contractiō（引き締め・短縮）＝ contrahō（引き寄せ集める）+ -tiō（動作・過程・結果の名詞を作る）。kom- は「共に・すっかり」で、ばらばらのものを一点へ引き寄せる動き。
引き寄せて間隔が縮むから「収縮」（muscle contraction 筋収縮）、語や文を縮めるから「短縮形」（don't は do not の contraction）。出産の「陣痛」も子宮の収縮のこと。経済では景気の「縮小」。
同じ contrahō から contract（引き寄せて一つにする→契約する／収縮する）が出ている。contract 系は「引き寄せてまとめる」と読むと、契約と収縮という遠い意味が一本につながる。
