覚え方
ラテン語 deitās(神性)= deus(神)+ -tās(状態を表す名詞を作る。英語の -ty)。deus の奥は *dyew-(輝く;明るい空) で、まぶしく晴れた天そのものが神と重ねられていた。
もとは「神である性質」という抽象名詞だったが、英語では神そのものを指す語として使われる。a Greek deity(ギリシャの神)、a local deity(土地の神)のように、特定の宗教に限らず幅広く使える中立的な語である。
大文字の the Deity は唯一神を指す。同族の divine(神の)・deify(神格化する)とセットで、dei- は「神」と押さえるとよい。
