demo-（民衆・人々）+ -graphy（記録の方法や研究分野を表す） で「人口の研究」。-graphy はギリシャ語 -γρᾰφῐ́ᾱ（ある主題を書き記すこと） の形である。
demo- のもとは δῆμος（区域・その住民） で、さらに δαίομαι（分ける・分配する） につながる。土地を分けた単位とそこに住む人々、というのが出発点。書く側は *gerbʰ-（刻む・削る） なので、全体で「人々を区切って刻み記す学問」になる。
補足: geography（地の記述）・biography（生の記述）と並べれば -graphy の型がつかめる。研究者は demographer、形容詞は demographic。
