earthquakeの語源と覚え方
覚え方
earthquake は earth（大地）+ quake（激しく震える）。古英語の eorþe（地面・土壌） と cwacian（震える・戦慄する） に対応し、「大地が激しく震えること」が原義である。
そこから、地面を揺るがす自然現象として「地震」を指すようになり、さらに比喩的に「大きな混乱を招く出来事」という意味にも広がった。eorþe につながる *h₁er-（到着する・大地に定住する） は、定住する場所としての大地を思い浮かべると覚えやすい。
earthquake の前半は「大地」、後半は「揺れ」。earth + quake = 大地が揺れると、そのまま情景で覚えるのがコツ。
