ecologyの語源と覚え方
覚え方
eco-（環境・自然界）+ -logy（学問） で「生き物とそのすみかを扱う学問」。もとはドイツ語 Ökologie（生態学）= öko-（環境・住まい）+ -logie（学問の名を作る） をそのまま英語に写した語である。
öko- の背後にあるのは *weyḱ-（住居・集落）で、出発点は「学問」でも「自然保護」でもなくすまいだった。生き物を一軒の家の住人と見て、その家全体（環境）との付き合い方を調べる、というのが原義に近い。そこから ecology は学問名だけでなく「生態系・生態」そのものも指すようになった。
同じ *weyḱ- は economy（家のやりくり→経済）にもある。eco- を見たら「エコ＝環境」より先に「家・すみか」と読むと、ecology と economy が一続きに見えてくる。
