フランス語 niche（壁のくぼみ）をそのまま取り込んだ語。もとは像や花瓶を置くために壁に彫られたくぼみを指した。

「そこにぴったり収まる場所」という感覚から、生態学の「生態的地位」、商売の「すきま市場」、人について「適所」（find one's niche 自分に合った場所を見つける）へと広がった。

発音は二通りあり、英国では「ニーシュ」、米国では「ニッチ」が多い。日本語の「ニッチ市場」は後者の音。「壁のくぼみ＝ちょうど収まる場所」を思い浮かべれば全ての意味がつながる。
