recession はラテン語 recessiō（後退・減少・退去）を受け継いだ語である。もとになる recēdō（後退する・撤退する）に、-tiō（動作・過程・結果を表す名詞要素）が加わり、「後退すること・後退した状態」を表した。
人や軍隊の後退から、数量の減少や活動の衰えへ意味が広がり、経済では「景気が後退すること」、つまり景気後退・不況を指すようになった。
recede（後退する）・recess（引っ込んだ場所・休会）も同じ流れの語。recess- / reced- を見たら、前へ進まず後ろへ下がるというイメージで、recession の「後退・減少」を覚えるとよい。
