ラテン語 phantasia（想像・空想） から。目の前にないものを心に思い描く働きを指した語で、英語でもまず「空想・幻想」が出発点になる。
そこから、現実にはあり得ない世界を描くジャンル名「ファンタジー」へ広がった。a fantasy world（空想世界）、live in a fantasy（夢想にふける）。日本語の「ファンタジー」はジャンル寄りだが、英語の fantasy は頭の中で作り上げたもの全般を指す点で広い。
形容詞は fantastic（空想的な・素晴らしい）、動詞は fantasize（空想する）。imagination が「像を作る力」に重心があるのに対し、fantasy は現実離れした中身そのものを指す。
