ラテン語 imāginor（思い描く） を受けた語。「心の中に像を立ち上げる」がそのままの意味で、英語でも「想像する・思い描く」を担う。
扱うのは目の前の現実ではなく頭の中で作った像なので、そこから「〜だと思う・〜だろう」という控えめな推測にも広がった（I imagine he's busy.）。
