fin は「区切る・終える」、ance がその行為を名詞にする。もとは支払いを済ませて決着をつけることで、中英語 finaunce は「支払い・身代金」を指した。そこから、金を動かして取引を決着させる働き、つまり「金融・財政」になった。
動詞では「資金を提供する」。finance a project（事業に資金を出す）のように使い、単なる現金ではなく、資金の調達・運用・管理の全体を表す語である。
