foot（足→長さの単位フィート）+ -age（量・集合を表す名詞を作る） で、もとは「フィートで測った長さ」。映画フィルムの長さを表す言葉だった。
フィルムを長さで数えたことから、撮影された映像そのものを指すようになった。security camera footage（防犯カメラの映像）、raw footage（未編集の素材）。不可算名詞で、数えるときは a piece of footage という。
foot の背後は *ped-（踏む・歩む） で、pedal（足で踏むもの）・pedestrian（歩行者）と同じ流れ。-age は「まとまった量」を作る部分で、mileage（走行距離）・baggage（手荷物）と同じ作りである。
