古英語 forst（霜・厳寒）から。背後にある *prews-（凍る・霜）が示すとおり、凍りつくことそのものを指す古い語である。
名詞では地表や窓に付く「霜」、天気の話では「氷点下の冷え込み」を指す。動詞は「霜で覆う」で、そこから菓子に糖衣をかける frosting（アイシング）という用法も生まれた。frostbite（凍傷）・frosty（霜の降りた・冷ややかな）も同じ流れ。
*prews- からは freeze（凍る）が来ており、frost はその名詞側にあたる。freeze が動き、frost が結果と対にして覚えるとよい。defrost は de-（取り除く）を付けて「霜を取る→解凍する」。
