古英語 gōdnes = gōd（良い）+ -nes（形容詞から抽象名詞をつくる） が、中英語 goodnesse を経た語。gōd の芯は *gʰedʰ-（結び合わせる・適う） で、「ぴたりと合っている＝好ましい」 が good のもとの発想である。
意味は二筋ある。人については「善良さ・親切さ」（the goodness of her heart＝彼女の心の優しさ）、食べ物については「滋養・栄養分」（all the goodness of whole grains＝全粒穀物の栄養まるごと）。訳語が「善」と「栄養素」に分かれるのはこのためである。
Oh my goodness! / Thank goodness! は God を口にするのを避けた言い換えとして定着した表現。-ness は形容詞を状態の名詞にする型（kindness・darkness・happiness）で、good との対応をそのまま押さえればよい。
