hallmarkの語源と覚え方
覚え方
hall（広間）+ mark（印）。ここでの hall はロンドンの金細工師組合の会館を指し、金銀製品はそこへ持ち込まれて純度を検定され、合格の刻印を打たれた。その検定印が hallmark である。
「会館が保証した本物の印」という重みから、品質保証の証、さらに「そのものだと一目でわかる決定的な特徴」へ意味が広がった。the hallmark of a good teacher（良い教師の証）、bear all the hallmarks of ~（〜の特徴をすべて備えている）のように使う。
hall の奥にあるのは覆う・隠すを表す語根で、そこから「貯蔵室」または「家の主室」を指す語ができた。「お墨付きの刻印」と覚えれば、貴金属の話から人物評まで一続きに理解できる。
