古英語 heall（広間・館）を受け継いだ語。さかのぼると「貯蔵室」または「家の主室」を指した語に行き着き、その背後には隠す・覆うという意味の語根がある。
大きな部屋や建物を指す語として、領主の館の大広間（great hall）、集会用の建物（city hall, concert hall）、大学の寮や学舎（hall of residence）へと用法が広がった。アメリカ英語で「廊下」を指すのは、建物内部の通り抜ける空間という感覚からと考えると覚えやすい。
