ラテン語 ignōrō（知らない）の現在分詞 ignōrāns から来た語で、現代語としては ignore（無視する）+ -ant（〜している） と見ても同じ形になる。「知らない状態にある」が原義。
元にあるのは「知る・認識する」を表す *ǵneh₃- で、そこに否定が付いた形である。この *ǵneh₃- からは know（知る）・knowledge・recognize（見知る→認識する）・diagnosis（見分けること）が出ている。「知らない」と「無視する」が同じ語族なのは、ignore がもともと「知らないことにする」だから。
注意したいのは、ignorant が「無学だ」という侮蔑に響くこと。単に「知らない」なら unaware や not familiar with のほうが安全である。
