ラテン語 inculcō = in-(中へ)+ calcō(踏む・踏みつける)。calcō は calx(かかと)から出た動詞で、かかとで踏み込む動きを表した。
踏んで押し込むところから、考えや価値観を繰り返し説いて頭に「植え付ける」意味になった。inculcate discipline in children のように使う。
同じ calx の系統に recalcitrant(蹴り返す→言うことを聞かない)がある。
