ラテン語 ligātūra（結び・綴じ）から。ligō（結ぶ・縛る）+ -tūra（行為やその結果を表す名詞を作る）で、「縛ること、縛るためのもの」が原義である。
英語では分野ごとに姿を変える。医学なら血管を縛る結紮糸、音楽なら音符をつなぐスラー、文字の世界なら二字を結んで一字にした合字。共通するのは「別々のものを結び付ける」という一点である。
補足: 合字は日本語にもあり、麻呂を一字にした「麿」がその例。英語では & が代表的な合字として知られる。同じ *leyǵ- の系統には ligament（靭帯）・ligate（結紮する）が並ぶ。
