ラテン語 methodus（特定の課題を達成するための体系的手順）は、物事を順序立てて進めるための道筋を表した。そこから method は「目的に到達するための方法・手順」という意味になった。
methodus の背景にある再建形 *sed-（座る）には、落ち着いて腰を据えるイメージがある。method を見たら、思いつきで動くのではなく、座って手順を組み立て、課題を解決する道筋と覚えるとよい。methodical（手順を重んじる）も同じ連想で理解できる。
