minorityの語源と覚え方
覚え方
ラテン語 minōritās（年少であること）= minor（より小さい・年下の）+ -tās（状態を表す）。英語では minor + -ity と分解でき、「小さい側であること」が原義。
そこから集団の中で数の少ない側、すなわち「少数・少数派」を指すようになった。もとの「未成年」の意味も法律の文脈に残っており、during his minority（未成年の間）のように使う。
対義語は majority（多数派）。ethnic minority（少数民族）、a minority opinion（少数意見）のように使い、minor（小さい方）+ -ity（状態）＝少ない側と読めば majority と取り違えない。
