覚え方
ラテン語 mōrālis(習俗の・道徳の)= mōs(習慣・風習)+ -ālis(関係を表す形容詞を作る)。「その社会で当たり前とされているふるまい」が出発点で、天から降ってきた規範ではなく、人々の習慣の積み重ねを指す語だった。
もともとギリシャ語 ἠθῐκός(性格の・道徳の)を訳すために作られた語なので、英語の moral と ethical は同じ内容を別の言語から言い直した二つの語である。日常語寄りが moral、職業規範などの体系寄りが ethical、という住み分けが今はある。
名詞でも使い、the moral of the story は「その話の教訓」、複数の morals は「品行」。派生に morality(道徳性)・demoralize(士気をくじく)。綴りの似た morale(士気)とは別語なので、次項と合わせて区別しておきたい。
