mortgage は古い形 morgage の mort（死）+ gage（誓約・担保）という組み立てで覚えられる。mort はラテン語 mors（死）に由来し、gage は wadium（誓約・担保）に当たる。「死んだ担保」とは、借金を返し終えるまで担保が自由にならない、という発想である。
そこから、土地や家を借金の担保に入れる「抵当権設定」、特に住宅購入のための長期 loan を表すようになった。mors・mort の背景にある *mer-（知覚から完全に消える）、wadium・gage の背景にある *wedʰ-（導く・誓約で結ぶ）も合わせ、mort は返済まで動かせないもの、gage は誓約として結び付けるものと覚えるとよい。
