neck（首）+ tie（結び目・留め具）。「首に結ぶもの」という、見た通りの合成語である。英語では単に tie と言うほうが多い。

tie の背後には *dewk-（引く・導く）がある。「引き寄せて結ぶ」が結び目の正体で、同じ流れに duct（導管）・conduct（導く）・educate（引き出す→教育する）・introduce（中へ導く）が並ぶ。duc-/duct- は「引く・導く」。

用法にも注意。ネクタイを「締める」は tie a tie / put on a tie、「ゆるめる」は loosen one's tie。bow tie（蝶ネクタイ）も同じ tie の仲間である。
