覚え方
persistent は、ラテン語 persistō（持続する・固執する）に由来する。per-（通り抜けて・徹底的に）+ sistō（立たせる・止める）という組み合わせで、困難を通り抜けても立ち続けるイメージである。
そこから「持続する」もの、さらに一つの態度や行動をやめずに続ける「執拗な」という意味になった。sistō のもとにある *steh₂-（立つ）を手がかりに、persistent は立ち続けて、なかなか動かないと覚えるとよい。
