覚え方
ラテン語 poēta（詩人） の系統から出た語で、詩人の仕事とその産物、つまり「詩・韻文」というジャンル全体を指す。
そのため poetry は原則として数えず、一編を数えるときは a poem を使う。read poetry（詩を読む）／ write a poem（詩を一編書く）と並べると使い分けが定まる。
poet（詩人）・poem（詩）・poetic（詩的な）と同族で、poe- は「詩」、-ry は「その仕事・その全体」（bakery パン屋、machinery 機械類）と読める。
