覚え方
ラテン語 prōtrahō（引き出す・引き延ばす）= prō-（前へ）+ trahō（引きずる・引く）。隠れているものを前へ引き出して見えるようにする、が原義。
そこから、人の顔や姿を紙の上へ引き出した「肖像画」、さらに言葉で人物を描き出す「描写」になった。「その人らしさを前へ引き出したもの」が portrait。
prō-（前へ） は *per- / *pro- の流れで、progress（前へ進む）・promote（前へ動かす）と同じ。trahō（引く） は tractor（引く機械）・attract（引きつける）・contract（引き締める→契約）と同族で、tract を見たら「引く」。用紙の向きの portrait（縦長）は、肖像画が縦長に描かれたことから。
