potty1の語源と覚え方

pot（鍋・容器）+ -y（親しみを込めた呼び名を作る語尾）。幼児用の便器、いわゆるおまるを指す。potty training（トイレの練習）・go potty（トイレに行く）のように、育児の場面で定着している言い方。
-y は doggy・tummy・daddy と同じ、幼児語をつくる語尾。英国の口語には「頭がおかしい・ばかげた」という意味の potty もあり、こちらは別の使い方。動詞として potty train（トイレを教える）とも言う。
