precisely は precise（正確な）+ -ly（〜のように）で、「正確に」「まさに」という副詞になる。precise には、*preh₂-（前に）のイメージと、*kh₂eyd-（切る・刻む）、*keh₂id-（硬い表面にデザインを刻む）のイメージが重なり、余分を切り取って輪郭を明確にする感覚がある。
そこから precisely は、曖昧さを残さず「きっちり正確に」という意味になった。precise を見たら「細部まで切り分けて明確に」、-ly を見たら「そのように」と考えると、precisely の使い方がつかみやすい。
