present（その場にある・現在の）+ -ly。中英語の presently は「直ちに・今すぐ」という意味だった。
その「すぐに」が緩んだ結果、英では「まもなく・やがて」（He will arrive presently.）、米では「現在・目下」（She is presently working in Tokyo.）と、二つの意味が併存している。未来形なら「まもなく」、現在形・進行形なら「現在」と、時制で読み分けるのがコツである。
present の奥には *prai-（前に）と *h₁es-（ある）があり、「目の前にある」が芯。present（現在の・出席して）の二つの意味も同じところから出ている。
