覚え方
recuse（回避する・忌避する）+ -al（行為を表す名詞を作る） で、裁判官や審査員が自分の担当から身を引くことを指す法律用語。日本語では「回避・忌避」、辞退と訳されることもある。
recuse の re- には *wre-（後ろへ・再び） があり、「後ろへ引く」方向の語。利害関係や偏りの疑いがある案件から自ら外れる場面で使い、The judge recused herself from the case.（裁判官はその事件から回避した）が典型。
他人が求める場合は motion for recusal（忌避の申し立て）。利益相反（conflict of interest）とセットで出てくる語なので、ニュース英語ではこの組み合わせで覚えると定着しやすい。
