reduce（還元する）+ -ant（それを行うものを表す語尾）。化学で、相手に電子を与えて還元する物質、すなわち還元剤を指す（reducing agent とも言う）。

reduce は *wre-（後ろへ）と *dewk-（引く・導く）の系統からなり、元へ引き戻すという組み立て。金属の酸化物から酸素を取り去って元の金属へ戻す操作が「還元」で、日常語の「減らす」と同じ語が化学用語になっている。対になるのは酸化剤の oxidant。
