re-（再び）+ install（据え付ける）。「もう一度据え付ける」から、ソフトウェアを「再インストールする」、設備を「付け直す」。
install は in-（中へ）+ stall（置き場・仕切られた場所） で、「所定の場所に置く」が原義。stall は市場の「屋台・売り場」として今も使う。
